The Thrill of the Hunt
May 4th, 2009

Two friends called me this weekend with the same news, both had been sabotaged in their fledgling businesses.
Of course, I listened attentively, and then offered my counsel… For I myself have been sabotaged more than once.
Unfortunately, it’s a part of human nature to be jealous…but the hardest part is being knocked out of your boots, without ever having seen it coming.
It took me a long time to let go of what had been done to me, and as I told the story to my friends (I hadn’t talked about much since it happened), I felt a very strange feeling.
It wasn’t anger, or resentment… I had already let go of these emotions… What I felt was gratitude.
Not for the act itself, I’m no masochist…
I was thankful because as a result of what had transpired, I had been pushed to go beyond my comfort zone — and I was starting to get comfortable at that theatre.
Comfort is nice and at times necessary, but it oftentimes leads to complacency. Who knows? If that theatre critic would have seen my work that night, and that translated into a production at that theatre, I might have been satisfied… and like comfort, satisfaction has a way of filling you up — so much so that you’re no longer hungry…
And though at times that hunger, that desire, hurts — it sets one hunting*… And the hunt* is what keeps us going. The comfort, the “food” sustains us, but the hunt* helps us realize we’re alive.
I used to want someone to come along and produce my work, now I’m looking for ways to produce it…
In addition to gratitude, what I realized is what a long long way I’ve come.

PS — Sue’s News does not condone or encourage hunting in any way. Sue Hodara is a vegetarian. Her idea of hunting is shopping at Filene’s Basement.
