It’s Nice to Be Recognized

It was a chilly, rainy, windy night last night… Not a night to go out on the town. But, we did have a few patrons in our audience, and they seemed to forget the nasty weather after spending some time with us in Jane’s world.

One audience member, Michael Roderick, a fellow producer, was so moved last night, he wrote about it in his blog. Thanks for your kind words and taking the time to recognize good work when you see it.

P. S. — There’s still time to get your tickets for “Disillusioned”. We run through October 25th.

Keeping it Fresh

I’m sure some of you wonder how actors do the same show night after night and still manage to keep it fresh.

And though we have yet to experience the joy of having a show run 8 times a week, our actors are getting to a point where they know the script, backwards and forwards. So, how do they do it?

I can’t speak for every actor, but I spoke to one from our cast and we found a new emotion for him to work from… a new place for him to explore. And at tonight’s performance, I could see a major difference.

Whereas it might seem like a challenge, I see it more as an opportunity. A chance to see how far one can go, and grow.

Balancing Act

I wrote a new song today… It’s been bubbling up for a while, this urge to write. And so I made some time today, and I think I’m going to sleep well tonight.

Story

Last week, we saw an industry only reading of a Broadway-bound musical. Tonight, we saw a musical in a festival.

The difference (besides heavyweight producers backing the former, and many more rough edges for the latter) was not so much a matter of music — it was a matter of story.

The Broadway-bound show can only be headed to the great white way because the story is so strongly fleshed out.

As important as music is to a musical, without a book to move the story along, and actually give the show it’s momentum and support, it’s a concert, not a piece of theatre.

A catchy tune is great, but it can’t carry the weight of a show… and it’s a great story that touches the heart of an audience and has them thinking about a show long after the last curtain call.

An Amazing Compliment

We had our second show in this run of “Disillusioned” this past Sunday afternoon. We had a group from Washington DC who had come to see one of our actors.

At the end of the performance, a few of them came and shook my hand, to congratulate me and tell me how much they appreciated my writing. Then, they said something wonderful, “Are you coming to Washington DC with anything anytime soon? We have a wonderful theatre scene there.”

I responded the only way I could, “We’d love to. We’re always happy to expand into new markets.”

I was so flattered…that they like the play so much they wanted to see more. I couldn’t have asked for a better reception.

Feelin’ the Love

Last night’s opening night was wonderful!!! It was a smaller house than we’ve had (but for a Wednesday night for an off-off-Broadway show, I can’t complain). What they lacked in size, they made up for in participation.

They clapped after EVERY scene.

EVERY SINGLE SCENE.

I was in such awe I even said it aloud (as softly as possible to Scott). “They keep clapping for every single scene.”

A nice way to spend our anniversary, feelin’ the love…

P.S. — Plenty of opportunities to share in the love… We run through October 25th. Get your tickets here.

Our Journey

In addition to celebrating Opening Night of “Disillusioned” tonight, my wonderful hubby, Scott, and I will be celebrating our two year wedding anniversary.

It’s amazing how far we’ve come in two years… and fitting to celebrate at the theatre tonight.

To celebrate our milestone, I’m dedicating Christopher Cross’ performance of “Sailing” to my shipmate for life. There’s no one I’d rather be on this journey with than you.

Charting Growth

Tonight’s rehearsal not only brought us that much closer to opening night, it also brought us to a place where the actors could refine their speech, movements, even the pauses between their dialogue.

In all the phases of this show, I feel like I’ve watched a child grow and mature.

Through each phase, it hasn’t always been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade a second of it.
